Last week, I attended the live recording of Marvin Sappas forthcoming album “I Win” produced by the great Aaron Lindsey! The night was full of songs that went along with his inspirational hits such as a?He Saw The Best In Mea? and a?Never Wouldave Made Ita?. Lots of people were in attendance at Evangel Cathedral in Upper Marlboro, MD to witness such a great night in music.

This was Marvin Sappas first time recording an album outside of his home Grand Rapids, Michigan where he’s the Senior Pastor at Lighthouse Full Life Center Church. In the video played at the beginning of the night, he explained why he chose the DC area stating that it has a?been a major support to mea?. That support was ever so apparent as the DC area packed out Evangel Cathedral, a sanctuary that seats over 2,000 people.

The recording started out with an up-tempo go-go tune, a?Clap Your Handsa?, in true DC fashion as the home of the Godfather of Go-Go. The energy and praise was non-stop from that point on. He did a medley of hymns likeAa?Power In the Blood,” a?Canat Nobody Do Me Like Jesus,” “Bless the Lord,” and a?Oh The Blooda? that struck the hearts of the worshippers in the congregation. It was made evident very early in the night that this was not a musical recording, but an experience with God.A Songs with such inspirational messages like a?Thereas no Quit in me..a?, a?Youave been consistent.. even when I was distant..a?A and my personal favorite a?This canat be it.. God is so much bigger than this!a? really resonated in the hearts of those in attendance.

Background vocals were provided by Myron Butler and members of his group “Levi” along with singers from a local DC group “Charles Butley & Trinity.” They all blended beautifully and accented every song with their tight harmonies. One thing about Pastor Sapp is he loves discovering untapped talents and giving them a platform to showcase their gifts. During a brief intermission he gave all of the singers a chance to talk about the other artists they’ve worked with and what projects they’re currently working on.

Numerous singers and songwriters were in the audience that night as well. Brittney Wright, who wrote the title track a?I Wina?, was spoken highly of by Pastor Sapp. He talked about how he was doing a conference in Baltimore and Brittney was the guest psalmist for the evening. As soon as he heard a?I Wina? it touched his heart.A The audience was absolutely moved by the song, so much so that it was reprised twice!

Darius Paulk was also in attendance and was fortunate enough to have a song on Pastor Sappas album as well. You may know him for his award winning writing skills on VaShawn Mitchell’s “Nobody Greater”. Darius wrote a song entitled a?Deepera? which is sure to be a hit on the album.

Other notable guests were media personality Jawn Murray, Season 2 Sunday Best Winner Y’Anna Crawley, Gerard Bonner of, Jessica Reedy, Ricky Dillard, William McDowell, and a host of other singer and songwriters from the DC area and neighboring states.

What I can appreciate about this night is how transparent Pastor Sapp was. He spoke about coping with the loss of his wife, Melinda Sapp, who passed in September 2010. This was the first recording heas done without her being right by his side, emotionally and creatively. It was refreshing to feel like Iam experiencing the creative genius behind this record and not just witnessing it. I believe this album will be Marvin Sappas best yet. Encouraging, uplifting, transparent, and God-filled are just some words I could use to describe this album but by no means is it all!

Please be on the lookout for Marvin Sappas newest album a?I Wina? scheduled to be released in March 2012.
